March 21, 1954: •Senior guard Dale Newton was named “Battling Bulldog,” at the PHS basketball banquet. (Newton lives south of Plainview and raises miniature horses.)

••“Little Norman Huggins, the Plainview Bulldogs´ hard-hitting outfielder, led the local nine in hitting during the regular season with an average of .367. Bobby Davis was the only other Bulldog with a .300 average, hitting .333. (Huggins is retired finance director for the City of Plainview and Davis is athletic director and head football coach at Frenship High School in Wolfforth.)

May 24, 1954

•Plainview High School´s band has had a very busy year and is the largest ever with more than 100 members. Making the All-State Band were Fred Ormand, Gayle McClain, Jane Poenack, Rosa Lee Ramsey and Dana MacNaughton.

May 12, 1954 Plainview Dailey Herald Back In Time

•Doyle May is recipient of the LaVerne Roach Award in memory of a former PHS student who died in the boxing ring in 1950. (The award will be presented next Monday night at the PHS Auditorium; Doyle May is a retired court reporter in Gadsden, Ala. )

•Thomas Heflin picked up his third victory in district and knocked in the winning run as Plainview beat Pampa 2-0 Friday at Jaycee Park. (Heflin, a chemical salesman for Conagra, continues to live in Plainview.)

March 16, 1954: •Rex Jordan of Plainview has been named to the District 1-4A All-Star Team. Named to the second team were Lester North and Hugh Bob Tilson.
